Coastal Renaissance Study Tour
09 September 2008

18 September, 1 – 4.30pm

Integreat Yorkshire will be co-hosting a study tour with the Institution of Economic Development in Scarborough on the 18 September. The tour will focus on the renaissance projects of Scarborough.

Background
Over recent decades Scarborough, like many other coastal towns, suffered from a prolonged period of economic, social and physical decline. By 2002, this had resulted in a town that had become tired physically and had lost much of its traditional economic rationale. Whilst work had taken place in an attempt to restructure the local economy, the extent of the decline meant that a far more radical and extensive intervention was required.

This catalyst for change emerged through Yorkshire Forward’s Urban Renaissance Towns (URT) programme. The programme was instigated following the Government's White Paper 'Towards an Urban Renaissance'. It sought to reconnect people to their ‘place’ through a Renaissance process that retained design principles at its heart but focused on sustainable economic improvements pursued through principles encompassing inclusion and engagement.

The initial process of involvement and engagement culminated in the creation of an overarching strategic document – Kissing Sleeping Beauty – which brought together the ambitions and aspirations that local people and stakeholders had for the future of their town. This document would drive further Renaissance interventions across the town.

The tour
The tour will showcase five successful renaissance projects within Scarborough. You will have the chance to find out more about each project from people that were directly involved and speak to others from the Council, Scarborough Renaissance and Yorkshire Forward throughout the event.

The Workshop will be of particular interest to - those working on economic development, policy and community strategies, or those wishing to see their activities in a wider context.

Free Attendance
Attendance is free to both IED members and non-members, but because of limited space is subject to completion of a registration form.

Special note: Please note that there will be a short walk from Woodend Creative Workspace to Valley Road to embark on the coach.
