Carbon Trading Yorkshire Launches
17 December 2008

Carbon Trading Yorkshire (CTY) is an initiative developed to enable partner organisations to gain experience in carbon trading and develop skills to both maximise opportunity and mitigate risks from forthcoming legislation.

The Governments Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC), an example of forthcoming legislation, goes live in January 2010. Many of you will fall within it and be required to meet its conditions. CTY provides your organisation with a risk free simulation of the Carbon Reduction Commitment. CTY will assist you to meet reporting and financial requirements. For all, it offers an introduction and understanding of carbon trading.

As the UK’s first practise carbon trading scheme open to both public and private sectors, CTY will use actual energy data from your organisation, but have a simulated financial risk.

It will allow you to:

• Demonstrate leadership on climate change
• Act on climate change and reduce your carbon emissions now
• Learn about carbon trading and build skills and expertise within the discipline
• Encourage the whole organisation to get involved in your carbon reduction agenda
• Prepare you for forthcoming legislation.

The initiative is free to CAY partners. To utilise CTY you will need to be able to provide baseline carbon emission data (e.g. electricity consumption), by the first week in December. We allow some flexibility as to which parts of your organisation are included if data is incomplete, thus ensuring as many organisations as possible benefit from CTY. The scheme begins with an auction for carbon allowances in early January 2009. Throughout the year you will receive guidance and support from CAY and our partners the Local Government Information Unit (LGIU). Integreat Yorkshire is also supporting the process to ensure it provides a valuable learning experience.

To register for Carbon Trading Yorkshire please send an email to info@carbonaction-yorkshire.org.uk or contact your partner account manager. All that is required of CAY partner organisations is a signed letter of commitment from your organisation. If you are not yet a CAY partner, please either call us or email us, and we can arrange a visit to discuss benefits and register you to the scheme.

Should you have any specific questions please contact Caroline Finch (caroline.finch@carbonaction-yorkshire.org.uk Telephone 0113 261 5152) at your convenience.
