As part of the Sheffield ‘Pathfinder’ programme Bradfield School is scheduled to be rebuilt in 2012. At the heart of VISION is the desire to provide young people with the skills and knowledge to allow them to voice their ideas for the design of their new school. In collaboration with the school and lead architects, VISION was developed and delivered over three days during February and March 2008 at Bradfield School. The school wholeheartedly believes that for the redevelopment to be successful it will require a positive working relationship between home, school, the local community and the wider environment.

The VISION Journey included:

1. Inspirational Site Visit to Sheffield City Centre with Rosie Williams, HLM Architects
2. Participation in two one-day Creative Workshops.
3. Invitation to an Exhibition & Private View
4. A mini toolkit for young people to take away

Youth and design

“It was a really good experience and I hope the new school is filled with all our ideas” Year 7 pupil.

“They were a fantastic group of students to work with. There was a lot of information and new ideas to take on board as well as challenges with new skills. The pupils worked with great enthusiasm and concentration, often coming up with surprising results of wild and wonderful, but also practical ideas. Integrating public art into new build projects is an interesting and intriguing part of the design process. Understanding the process of being a client and working with briefs is no easy task, but I hope that the new school will reflect as much creativity as the pupils put in during this workshop.” Imi Maufe
